The decision to celebrate World Animal Day was made on October 4 at the International Congress of supporters of the movement for nature protection, held in Florence in 1931. Animal protection societies in many countries around the world have declared their readiness to organize mass events every year to protect the environment and increase activity in animal protection.
The date of October 4 was chosen not by chance. This is the day of Francis of Assisi – a Catholic saint who is considered the patron saint of animals. According to legend, the saint could communicate with animals and preach to birds.
On this day, environmental organizations once again remind humanity of the need to protect animals and tell what measures can be taken to save them. Mykolaiv Zoo, of course, has a direct relation to celebration of this day. We not only have a large collection of rare animals, but also create conditions for their successful reproduction, the zoo participates in many international programs for breeding wild animals. The zoo conducts a lot of educational work, we try to show each visitor how interesting, beautiful, wonderful animals are. Everyone's contribution is important in the preservation of animals.
