On January 14, Nicole Scherwinski visited Mykolaiv Zoo. She came to our zoo from Nuremberg and brought gifts for our elephants, Dinkar and Shanti, - hay nets made from natural materials by Garry White. These are gifts from the European Elephant Group. Nicole is a member of this organization. She is a very brave girl, because she dared to come to the elephants of Mykolaiv Zoo during martial law. Nicole is also taking samples of elephant dung with her so that German scientists can determine the stress level of Shanti and Dinkar. They also plan to receive samples from Kharkiv, Kyiv and Odesa zoos. The scientists will compare the results with samples from elephants in Western Europe. Thomas Dütsch, a member of the European Elephant Group, plans to publish a scientific article on the behavior of zoo elephants during wartime, based on the results of these studies and the information received from Nicole on the condition and behavior of elephants.
