On April 15, 2021, the Siberian tiger (Lat. Panthera tigris altaica) named Helios celebrates his birthday. He is 15 years old! This is a pretty decent age, taking into account that in the wild tigers live 12-15 years. Thanks to the constant care and attention of the staff of our zoo, the life expectancy of animals in the zoo is higher.
Helios arrived at Mykolaiv Zoo on February 26, 2008 from Poland (Poznan). He was transferred under the European program for keeping and breeding rare species.
Our birthday boy by nature is calm, balanced, has good relations with the tigresses Penelopa and Agrypyna. For 13 years of living in Mykolaiv Zoo he became the father of 22 cubs who went to different zoos of the world.
Now Helios lives in one enclosure with the tigress Penelopa. You can see them in the exhibit complex "Island of wild beasts". For tigers and lions enclosures with a rather big territory, a natural landscape, shady trees, pools in which the tigers like to bathe very much are constructed in Mykolaiv Zoo. Also the employees of the zoo constructed the wooden bridge, which is the favorite place of our birthday boy where he likes to eat and to relax.
The menu of the tigers in Mykolaiv Zoo consists of beef, chicken and fish. Once a week they receive live food in their diet.
