Today, March 8, a female Mishmi takin (Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor) named Kamila is celebrating her birthday. She is turning 13 years old! She came to our zoo from Riga in 2013.
By nature, the birthday girl is a kind and very sociable animal, a favorite of employees. Kamila likes fruits the most: apples, pears, cherries, apricots, as well as watermelons and melons.
Mishmi takin (Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor) is a rare species of even-toed animals of the Bovidae family, included in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Takins live in the mountainous areas of Bhutan, western China, northern Myanmar, and eastern India at an altitude of up to 4,000 meters above sea level. They live in small groups, but in winter, they descend lower on the slopes of the mountains, sometimes gather in herds of up to 100 heads. The fur of the animal is very thick and greasy, which protects it from very high humidity and fog. This animal became known to scientists only in 1850, but even today little is known about them.
You can see our birthday girl Kamila at the exhibit of the summer enclosure for antelopes. We invite everyone to take a walk to Mykolaiv Zoo to wish Kamila a happy birthday and feel the first breaths of spring at the zoo!
