According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 1035/2001 dated November 1, 2001, the Day of Veterinary Medicine Workers is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of August. The purpose of this day is to celebrate the significant contribution of veterinary medicine workers to ensuring veterinary and epizootic well-being. In 2024, the Day of Veterinary Medicine Workers falls on August 11.
Since ancient times, people have tried to reveal the main causes of diseases that caused livestock to die or fall ill, learned to diagnose diseases, describe and classify them, and developed appropriate treatment methods for many animal diseases. At the moment, there is a whole industry – veterinary medicine; it is engaged in the recognition and study of various diseases to which animals (native, wild, exotic, agricultural) are prone, and compiles a detailed description of them. Being a doctor of veterinary medicine is a vocation, because not everyone can understand the language of animals. This is an extremely responsible business that requires a lot of willpower, stress resistance and coolness from those willing to do it.
Every zoo should have a veterinarian, because they treat diseases and injuries of animals, if necessary, help cubs to be born, do a lot of work on disease prevention, do vaccinations, carry out disinfection, control the quality of animal feed.
Traditionally, on the second Sunday of August, the staff of Mykolaiv Zoo sincerely congratulates its veterinarians on their professional holiday. We wish them health and success in their difficult but necessary work! After all, you have a difficult and responsible business in your hands. It is nice to realize that people who work in this field are devoted to their profession, for you work is both a vocation, and eternal restlessness, and daily hard work. Thank you for conscientious performance of professional duties!
