Vyshyvanka day

May 16 – Vyshyvanka Day

World Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of May. In 2024, the holiday falls on May 16. Vyshyvanka Day appeared on the initiative of a student Lesya Voroniuk of Chernivtsi University named after Fedkovych in 2006. She suggested that other students come to class in vyshyvankas on one day. At first, several dozen students joined the action. Then teachers began to come in embroidered clothes, and the holiday became famous in the city. Gradually, Vyshyvanka Day began to spread throughout Ukraine, but it is celebrated most magnificently in Chernivtsi. The date of the holiday is specially designated for a weekday to emphasize that vyshyvanka can be an ordinary everyday item, and not just a festive outfit.

This holiday is designed to preserve ancient folk traditions of creating and wearing ethnic embroidered Ukrainian clothes. Anyone can participate in celebrating the holiday by wearing vyshyvanka. In a relatively short time, this holiday evolved from a student action to an international scale. For Ukrainians, embroidered shirts are a symbol of national identity. However, they are currently worn all over the world as a sign of support for our culture and traditions, which gained special meaning during the war.
