Life stories of roe deer of Mykolaiv Zoo
For now three roe deer (Latin Capreolus capreolus) live in Mykolaiv Zoo.
The oldest female named Nezabudka. She was born on May 22, 2014 in our zoo.
On September 24, 2019, a young roe deer (about 4-5 months old) came to the zoo, people found her entangled in a fishing net near the river, she was scared and did not feel very well. She stayed at the zoo's veterinary clinic for six months. All these months she was treated for endoparasites. The roe deer was given the name Serezhka in honor of the man Serhiy, who saved her and brought her to the zoo. Since the roe deer was found at the age at which she needed to receive mother's milk, she was fed powdered milk, which was added to the main feed by calculating the required amount. Serezhka and Nezabudka now live in the same enclosure.
And on August 15, 2020, another roe deer arrived at the zoo. She looked about one year old. This roe deer was also found by people confused and wounded in a fence of gas station on the outskirts of the city of Mykolaiv. The roe deer needed veterinary care, not indifferent people decided to bring her to Mykolaiv Zoo. Veterinary specialists of our zoo provided qualified assistance. At the zoo, the roe deer was immediately treated and quarantined and given a resounding name - Avgusta.
After the end of treatment and the quarantine period, Avgusta was joined in a group to Nezabudka and Serezhka. Since then, the three beauties began to live together.
In October 2020, a female roe deer named Nezabudka began to show aggression towards young females Avgusta and Serezhka.
Zoo experts suggest that this may be due to the period of estrus of roe deer. To prevent injuries, it was decided to expand the area of detention at the expense of the neighboring enclosure, where were kept lowland tapirs (Latin Tapirus terrestris), which were transferred to another enclosure. As the holding area increased, the relationship between the animals improved (this is exactly what the zoo staff observed).
