April 1 – International Bird Day (Ornithologist’s Day)
Bird Day in Ukraine is celebrated every year on April 1 to draw attention to the protection of birds. On this day, schoolchildren and adults make and hang birdhouses and feeders. Environmental campaigns, contests, and educational events about different bird species are held. People learn more about the importance of preserving birds’ natural habitats.
Mykolaiv Zoo, like other zoos, invites everyone to join the celebration of Bird Day. Zoos play an important role in conserving rare and endangered bird species through special breeding programs (for example, Mykolaiv Zoo has successfully bred many birds, including great white pelicans, southern ground hornbills, sacred ibises, and Steller's sea eagles, among many others).
Zoos also conduct scientific research and help restore bird populations in the wild. In addition, they educate people to treat birds and their habitats with care.
Everyone can help birds by feeding them in winter and installing bird feeders. It is important not to destroy nests or disturb birds during nesting periods. We can also protect natural habitats by not damaging or polluting them. Each of us can spread awareness about bird conservation and inspire others to care for nature.
We also invite you today to admire these wonderful birds in our photos or by visiting Mykolaiv Zoo!
