June 11 – International Lynx Day.
Today, June 11, the whole world celebrates International Lynx Day.
The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is a beautiful, graceful carnivore from the feline family, considered the largest cat in Europe. Lives in large forest areas, remote, frequented areas with dense undergrowth, windbreaks, marshy places. In nature, the lynx keeps where "the rooster cannot be heard" – far from populated areas, in the highlands. It is very difficult to meet this carnivore in natural conditions, because there are only 500 of these beautiful animals left in Ukraine!
In 1994, the lynx was included in the Red Book of Ukraine with the status of "rare species". It is protected by the IUCN Red List, CITES and the Berne Convention.
In Mykolaiv Zoo, lynxes have been kept for a long time, they lived on the old territory of the zoo. And more than one generation of lynxes lived on the new territory and more than 50 cubs were born.
By keeping and successfully breeding lynxes, our zoo contributes to the preservation of these beautiful animals.
