April 26 marks the anniversary of Mykolaiv Zoo – we are 125!
The history of Mykolaiv Zoo is a story of challenges and achievements, victories and tragedies, success and trials.
Mykolaiv Zoo traces its 125-year history back to 1901, when Mykola Pavlovych Leontovych’s private aquarium was opened to the public.
Over the years, the zoo has had several names: Mykola Leontovych’s Private Aquarium, State Aquarium, Mykolaiv State Aquarium-Zoo Garden, and Mykolaiv Zoo of National Importance. Generations of staff have come and gone, contributing their labor, knowledge, and experience to a beloved cause. The zoo itself has changed location – from Leontovych’s private residence to a spacious territory of over 20 hectares. The animal collection has evolved as well, continuously expanding with new species. Over the past century, the very approach to how zoos operate has changed. Humanity’s attitude toward nature has also evolved – from consumerism to the principles of sustainable development in harmony with nature.
Only one thing has remained unchanged – our love for animals!
Our team has gained vast experience in maintaining animal collections, breeding rare species, and carrying out environmental education. We have earned recognition both in Ukraine and around the world. Today, we congratulate our staff on this anniversary and thank them for their dedication and care for the animals.
We are pleased to present a program of events dedicated to the 125th anniversary of our zoo:
- The 125th anniversary celebration for zoo staff will take place on April 28, 2026, at 16:00 in the zoo’s assembly hall, where the best employees of our institution will be honored.
- On April 30 at 16:00, all zoo staff are invited to a festive evening celebrating the 125th anniversary of the zoo’s founding.
- From May 20 to May 23, 2026, a conference of zoo professionals from across Ukraine will be held in honor of our anniversary.
- On May 24, 2026, Mykolaiv Zoo will open its doors for free admission for children under 14, along with a festive concert program starting at 12:00.
Mykolaiv Zoo is a beloved place for many residents of Mykolaiv and our visitors. It draws people in and, through connection with nature, helps heal their souls. We hope that our friends, visitors, and colleagues will join us in celebrating the 125th anniversary of our beloved zoo!
