On September 12, 2019, Mykolaiv zoo handed over to the SE "Storozhynets Forestry" a female European bison (Bison bonasus) under the nickname Muza. This animal was born in Mykolaiv zoo in 2016.
Thus, representatives of the SE "Storozhynets Forestry" applied to the zoo administration to hand over one bison individual to them, citing the fact that they had started a bison nursery with a total area of 80.3 hectares.
The purpose of creation the nursery is to maintain the genetic reserve of the bison in the arbitrary conditions, and to obtain a litter with a prospective release into the environment of 2-3 year old young animals.
This is done in order to preserve and restore the Bukovyna sub-population of the European bison, whose total population is about 30 individuals in the Chernivtsi region.
It is known that the European bison has almost disappeared in nature. It was only through the efforts of indifferent people that this species was saved from complete extinction. Today, it is the only wild bull species in Europe.
It is already the second animal of this species, which Mykolaiv zoo passes to the nursery. So, in 2016 Mykolaiv zoo transferred to the SE "Storozhynets Forestry" a male bison under the nickname Murza. Both bison movements have been agreed with the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) Coordinator, Douglas Richardson.
We wish the success to the founders of the nursery, and thank them for their indifference to the conservation of nature.
