Today, the long journey of two pairs of Gambian giant pouched rats from Prague Zoo to Mykolaiv Zoo has successfully ended. This is a completely new species in the zoos of Ukraine. Gambian giant pouched rats are a gift from our zoo's sister zoo – Prague Zoo. Many thanks to our Prague friends and especially to the Director of Prague Zoo, Miroslav Bobek.
Gambian giant pouched rat (Cricetomys gambianus) – is one of the largest representatives of the mouse family; they grow to about 0.9 meters in length, including the tail. They lead a nocturnal lifestyle. Widely distributed in Africa south of the Sahara. Average weight – from 1 to 1.5 kg.
