Happy birthday, Nuru!

One and a half years ago all Mykolaiv met a very high (both figuratively and literally) guest who became the new inhabitant of the city – giraffe Nuru. He traveled about 1,400 kilometers to reach to our zoo. He arrived on August 29, 2019 from the Czech Zoo (Olomouc). During this time our Nuru became the famous citizen of Mykolaiv and a favorite of many visitors, both small, and adults.

Today, April 11, 2021, is his birthday. Nuru is 7 years old!

By nature, the birthday boy is balanced, calm, but conservative, he is afraid of going to the summer enclosure. Nuru is wary of strangers, but he is already accustomed to the staff of the department and he is trained to fulfil the commands to allow the inspection by veterinary specialists (of course, for a tasty reward).

Giraffe Nuru lives in the new enclosure not alone. He is accompanied by his friend Logan (he is two years younger than Nuru) who also arrived from the Czech Republic, from Dvur Kralove Zoo, on September 11, 2019. At first, when we began to keep Nuru and Logan together in one enclosure, Logan showed some aggression, but Nuru was patient to the restless behavior of his friend. Later they became friends and now they have a good relationship.

Nuru and Logan are the first giraffes to appear in the collection of Mykolaiv Zoo.

Rothschild's giraffe (Lat. Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) is a subspecies of giraffe (Lat. Giraffa camelopardalis), which is considered the rarest species. There are less than 700 individuals left in the wild. This animal is listed in the International Red List as an endangered subspecies.

Mykolaiv Zoo is very proud of its new inhabitants.
