May 5-11, 2024 is celebrated as Amphibians Week. This educational campaign is also called "Amphibians Awareness Week". The holiday draws attention to the important role that animals such as frogs, toads, newts and salamanders play in our ecosystem and food chain.
Mykolaiv Zoo joins an important ecological and educational campaign. During the week, we will offer you interesting information about amphibians and show you which species of amphibians you can see in our exhibit.
Fact one: The role of amphibians in nature and human life.
Amphibians eat a huge number of mosquitoes and other insects. Without amphibians, populations of mosquitoes and other insect pests would likely increase, threatening people, livestock, and plants. Also, amphibians are an important component in the food chain, because they are food for many species of animals.
Amphibians also serve us in medicine. Thanks to amphibians, many important discoveries in the field of animal physiology have been made. Amphibians are also indicator species that are very sensitive to the effects of climate change and environmental pollution.
Amphibians are a very vulnerable group of animals that need protection.
In the photos taken today in Mykolaiv Zoo, you can see an exhibit with Iberian ribbed newt (Pleurodeles waltl) – interesting representatives of tailed amphibians.
