The Christmas Bird Count is an annual global event that takes place every year at the end of January and is the largest event for studying wintering birds in the world. The tradition of counting birds was born in 1900 in the USA, when the editor of the ornithological magazine Bird-Lore, Frank Chapman, proposed a new way of Christmas hunting – with binoculars in hands instead of weapons.
Anyone can take part in this winter event, both a qualified ornithologist and an ordinary person interested in bird life. Recently, there have been more and more people interested. Students from many schools, environmental groups, entire families of amateur ornithologists with their children join this event. The main goal of the winter count is to find out the number of birds and species that have remained to winter near our homes.
This event is very important in our country during the war. With the help of the annual bird count, we can draw conclusions about how war affects birds. After all, explosions and polluted air negatively affect not only people, but also our smaller brothers. Birds are forced to move from frontline areas to safer places, their former places of residence change.
Visitors can take part in the large winter bird count and observe the birds of our fauna right on the territory of Mykolaiv Zoo. In our park you can meet many birds – common everywhere sparrows and tits of various species, rooks, gray crows, magpies, even ravens, woodpeckers and thrushes, goldfinches and turtledoves and many others.
