On November 27, Mykolaiv zoo sent a male European bison (Bison bonasus), nickname Mustang, to Tbilisi zoo (Georgia) within the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).
This species is part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), so its movement is regulated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) by the coordinator for this species, Douglas Richardson (United Kingdom). Mr. Douglas Richardson gave us recommendation to move our young male bison to Tbilisi zoo. We, in turn, contacted Tbilisi zoo and they confirmed their willingness to accept Mustang to create a full-fledged couple with their female.
Tbilisi zoo organized specialized motor transport for transportation of bison from Mykolaiv to Tbilisi, the animal was successfully caught, loaded into a transport container and sent to its new home.
This year Mykolaiv zoo is transferring the bison for the second time under the European Endangered Species Programme. On September 12 of the current year we sent a young female bison to Storozhynets forestry (Chernivtsi region, Ukraine), where she will participate in the program of reintroduction of this species into the wild.
