August 10 – World Lion Day
On August 10, Ukraine and the world celebrate World Lion Day. This holiday was launched in 2013 by the organization Big Cat Rescue, which protects big cats from cruelty and extinction. The purpose of this day is to draw attention to the problems faced by lions in the wild and to raise awareness of the need for their protection.
They are called the “Kings of the Jungle” because of their attractive and formidable character, created by their huge body and thick shiny mane. The powerful roar of a lion is unparalleled, it can be heard even five miles away. Thanks to pop culture icons such as Simba from “The Lion King”, people are interested in lions, their biology. However, although lions existed in large populations 100 years ago, today their number in the world has significantly decreased as a result of poaching and loss of natural habitat. Therefore, World Lion Day draws attention to this endangered species by raising funds and strengthening protective measures. World Lion Day is a reminder that these majestic animals need our support and protection so that their population is preserved for future generations.
The activities of nature reserves, including zoos, contribute to the preservation of one of the largest predators on the planet and contribute to the preservation of these magnificent creatures for future generations.
More than 100 lion cubs have been born in Mykolaiv Zoo over its entire history. Now we have a whole lion pride. The head of the pride is a male named Lank. His girlfriend Lola also lives with him. Together with them, their children Kim and Cora, who were born on November 24, 2021, live in the same enclosure.
We invite everyone to Mykolaiv Zoo to get acquainted with the royal family. You can see them in the exhibit complex "The Island of Animals".
