World Wetlands Day

Every year on February 2 World Wetlands Day is celebrated. This marks the date of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city Ramsar.

The purpose of World Wetlands Day is to increase interest in measures to support the future of these vital environments and the species that depend on them, especially at this time of year, when they are an important source of food and wintering grounds for waterfowl.

Interestingly that in 1971 the Ramsar Convention was signed by 18 states, in 2000 – by 119, as of today it was joined by 159 states. The List includes 1869 Ramsar sites with a total area of 1,836,000 km2.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has added 9.2 thousand hectares of wetlands to the list of wetlands of international importance. This is stated in the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of February 23, 2011 № 147-r.

Today the theme of World Wetlands Day emphasizes the importance of wetlands to ensure the sustainable development of mankind and the preservation of the biosphere as a whole. Implementation in practice of priorities in the direction of conservation of wetlands is possible only by joint efforts of all governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations, the entire population of the country. By joining this work, you will contribute to the preservation and reproduction of extremely valuable wetlands for our future!
