Of course, posts on our page are usually written by adult zoo staff. But today’s greeting for our elephant Shanti was written by a young zoo biologist, Artem Ovsyanov. The young researcher has long been studying the history of keeping elephants in our zoo and in others. Today, he wants to share some interesting information about the birthday elephant that he found online, on websites and pages dedicated to elephants.
“Happy Birthday, Shanti!
Today our Asian elephant Shanti celebrates his eighteenth birthday. Shanti was born on May 6, 2008, at Hannover Zoo. His mother, Khaing Hnin Hnin, gave birth to him in her enclosure at 3:25 a.m. At the time of Shanti’s birth, she already had offspring –Farina (2003) and Tarak (2005). Farina, Tarak, and Shanti were the offspring of the male Kelvin. The female nursed Shanti until he was three years old. Later, he met Dinkar, who was born on August 6, 2010. On November 10, 2019, he arrived with him at Mykolaiv Zoo.”
