Congratulations to Dinkar on his anniversary!
On August 6, 2020, our Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) Dinkar celebrates his anniversary. He is 10 years old!
On his birthday, Dinkar received from fairy-tale heroes (the role of which was successfully performed by our staff and young biologists of the zoo) holiday treats - juicy watermelons, fragrant melons, sweet apples, bananas, carrots. The guest of honor at the festive table was a friend of the birthday boy - an elephant Shanti.
Dinkar was born in 2010 at Hanover Zoo. Before coming to us, this young elephant has already changed 3 zoos. The fact is that Dinkar - a real thug. He is very active, playful and capricious. But such stubborn pests are the most interesting and are common favorites.
Dinkar lives in the same enclosure with his friend Shanti, who was born on May 6, 2008, also at Hanover Zoo. Elephants arrived to Mykolaiv Zoo from Hungary on November 10, 2019. The animals were transferred under the European Endangered Species Programme.
Mykolaiv Zoo waited for 10 years for return to the collection of these giants. Of course, it not only waited, but also managed to prepare for such an event. According to all the recommendations and advice of the EAZA zoological consultant Douglas Richardson from 2017 to 2018 the repair and reconstruction of the winter and summer enclosure were carried out. In the winter enclosures, the water supply system was overhauled, the heating system was updated, new decor was equipped, etc. The summer enclosure was significantly expanded, a new swimming pool for elephants was installed, new premises for feeding elephants or for carrying out the necessary manipulations were equipped, and a canopy was installed.
Our jubilee Dinkar and his friend Shanti are almost the same age (well, what does the difference of 2 years mean for an animal living 50-60 years?), but they are very different in temperament. Shanti is calm and intelligent. Behaves very decently. Dinkar's character is like that of a bad boy. He allows himself to bully the older elephant, he is mobile, constantly playing, throwing brooms. During regular training, Dinkar, unlike the diligent and obedient Shanti, does not always follow commands, can be cranky. But, despite the behavior of bully Dinkar, both elephants are very connected with each other and always spend their leisure time together.
Elephant Dinkar is not the only jubilee of August. We are preparing to welcome other birthday animals.
In the royal family of lions Lanka and Loli will also soon have a holiday. Their children Simba and Ilana will celebrate their first birthday on August 12. Parents and children still live together and are a friendly family.
Also, zebra Bianca, who came to our zoo from Drohobych city, will celebrate her 5th anniversary on August 16. Now she has become a real beauty and she has already become a mother. In 2019 Bianca gave birth to a calf named Basar. Bianca is a kind and caring mother, she is also quite calm and trusting of people.
