Today, an interesting event took place dedicated to the birthday of our lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) named Sol. He is turning 11 years old! The birthday animal arrived at Mykolaiv Zoo together with his friends Pinto and Piro on July 3, 2016 from Italy (from Barcelona, ​​Bussolengo, Naples).

In July 2020, the male Pinto was transferred to Feldman Ecopark for temporary maintenance and breeding.

By character, our birthday boy Sol is calm and docile, while his friend Piro is mobile, expressive, likes to be the first to be noticed.

The diet of tapirs includes: hay, grass, fresh vegetables, fruits. The most favorite food is melons, watermelons, apples, grapes.

All tapirs love to swim, so our zoo has done everything necessary for the comfortable existence of our tapirs. Both in the winter and in the summer enclosure, the animals have a swimming pool and a shower with a finely dispersed water sprayer.

Today, in honor of the holiday, the zoo staff performed demonstrative water procedures and feeding of our tapirs. After all, our birthday boy and his friend are very fond of swimming, especially now when it's really hot outside. Young biologists, together with the visitors, prepared delicacies for the tapirs and observed the animals' behavior during the summer water treatments.
