Reproduction of cotton-top tamarin

The first in the history of Mykolaiv Zoo case of successful reproduction and preservation of offspring of cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus).

We advise all our visitors to pay attention to this miracle - the baby cotton-top tamarin and his parents Zefir and Joanna. This is the first case of successful reproduction and preservation of young primates of this species. Before that we had babies of cotton-top tamarins, but they were unviable. There were attempts to artificially feed small tamarins, but also unsuccessful, the cubs died…

But this baby, born on March 28, 2020, is almost independent, moves not only on the back of adults, but already jumps on the branches, tastes "adult" food, loudly "chirps", as befits a tamarin. He is very active, interested in others, including visitors. Anyone can observe the behavior of the family of cotton-top tamarins, which is located in a small enclosure to the right of the chimpanzee enclosure.

For reference: cotton-top tamarin is a species of broad-nosed primates of the callitrichid family. The species is common in tropical forests in northern Colombia. This is a very small monkey. Its body is only 20-25 cm long. A distinctive feature of the species is the presence on the head of a bang of long white hair falling on the shoulders. This tamarin lives high among the treetops. Feed on insects, fruits, sap of trees. As with other callitrichid, the father takes care of the offspring and gives them to the female only for breastfeeding.
