Elephants from Europe arrived to Mykolaiv zoo

The largest animals of the land Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) after the long exhausted negotiations have finally arrived to Mykolaiv zoo! These giants for several years in a row were absent in the collection of Mykolaiv zoo. During this time, the enclosure for keeping of these animals has been modernized and repaired according to modern requirements and standards and is now ready to accept new residents.

The birthplace of both elephants is Hannover zoo, but recently they have lived in the zoos of Hungary: the cities of Szeged and Veszprem. Elephant named Shanti was born on May 6, 2008, and Dinkar on August 6, 2010. The animals were transferred under the European Program for the Conservation and Reproduction of Rare Species. They were accompanied by the directors of these zoos and keepers.

Now the huge new settlers Shanti and Dinkar are already in the zoo enclosures. They are curiously exploring the new premises, looking at the people around them, enjoying the first delicacies at the new place of residence. The older and larger gray giant Shanti has been exhibited in the winter room today. And then, after a 30-day quarantine, Dinkar will join him.

The administration of the zoo is grateful for the assistance provided in resolving the issue of receiving elephants - many thanks to Oleksandr Stadnyk, Oleksandr Senkevych, Mykola Kapatsyna, Dmitro and Vladyslav Chayka, Assistant to People's Deputy Pasichny A.
