A great loss for Mykolaiv Zoo: our colleague Ruslan Mashonin has been killed in the war.
Today, Mykolaiv Zoo mourns a great loss. While defending Ukraine against russian aggression, our colleague Ruslan Volodymyrovych Mashonin, born on 28 June 1984, was killed.
Ruslan was killed on 4 October 2026 while carrying out a combat mission in defence of his homeland.
Ruslan had worked at Mykolaiv Zoo since 7 May 2021. He was initially employed as an animal keeper in the Domestic Animals Department. From 1 April 2023, he worked as a groundskeeper in the Botanical and Maintenance Department.
On 16 April 2023, Ruslan was called up for military service as part of the mobilisation. He took up the defence of his homeland, joining those who risk their lives and make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Ukraine’s freedom and independence.
The staff of Mykolaiv Zoo are deeply saddened by the death of Ruslan Mashonin. It is difficult to find words to express the pain of this irreparable loss. We will cherish the memory of our colleague, who stood up to defend his homeland.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and everyone who knew and loved Ruslan. We share your pain and mourn alongside you.
Eternal memory and honour to the Hero who gave his life for Ukraine.
Heroes never die.
