Visit of colleagues from Amersfoort zoo, the Netherlands

On April 11, 2019, Nikolaev zoo was visited by colleagues from Amersfoort Zoo, the Netherlands. Marjo Hoedemaker – senior advisor at Amersfoort zoo, member of the Asian Elephant Committee and Bas Aalders – curator of ungulates, pachyderms, primates and carnivores at Amersfoort zoo.

The purpose of the visit was the inspection of the elephant's inner and outer enclosures to decide on the transfer of two young Asian elephants to our zoo. Also, they were interested in the experience of employees that work with animals of this species. Communication between Marjo, Bas and management and specialists of Nikolaev zoo was intense and fruitful with an agreement on further cooperation. During the visit it was held a meeting with Alexander Senkevich – the city mayor of Nikolaev. He personally listened to the opinion of foreign colleagues at the facility and together it was decided and approved to proceed with the elimination of minor observations, so that in the near future Nikolaev zoo can get elephants.

As a result, Marjo and Bas had a good impression about our zoo, our team, the mayor of the city. There were no significant complaints, only positive feedback. Separately, it was noted the high level and quality of educational and environmental enlightenment on the territory, including the Museum of the History of Nikolaev zoo.
