World lizard day

World Lizard Day is celebrated annually on August 14.

Today there are about 6263 species of lizards. Many of them are endangered. Loss of habitat, as well as the emergence of new predators such as dogs and cats, are the main threats to these reptiles.

Lizards are cold-blooded reptiles that live all over the world in environments ranging from bustling cities to the Amazon rainforest. Different types of lizards eat differently: there are insectivorous, omnivorous, and also carnivorous species. Some of them are rare and difficult to study. Therefore, scientists know little about their biology and habits.

There are 11 species of lizards in the fauna of Ukraine. The collection of Mykolaiv Zoo contains 20 species of lizards.
