October 4 – World Animal Day.
The decision to celebrate World Animal Day was made at the International Congress of Nature Conservationists held in Florence in 1931. This date was not chosen by chance: October 4 is the day of remembrance of the Catholic Saint Francis of Assisi, who is the patron saint of animals. According to legends, the saint could communicate with the animal world.
Animal protection societies organize various events and actions around the world until this day to draw people's attention to the current problems of the animal world and the environment.
We join in celebrating this important date, which is an occasion to remind humanity once again of the fragility and vulnerability of the animal world, which we must preserve for posterity.
Mykolaiv Zoo, in cooperation with other zoos of the world, contributes to the preservation of wild animals by keeping and successfully breeding them. Great white pelicans, Steller's sea eagles, cougars, servals, many species of monkeys, etc. breed here.
In addition, zoos are an important center of environmental education. Coming to us, observing the animals, communicating with them, our visitors understand how beautiful and harmonious they are, how much we need them! Perhaps it is thanks to animals that we can remain human!
