International Day for Biological Diversity

May 22 - International Day for Biological Diversity

Every year on May 22 humanity celebrates International Day for the Conservation of Biological Diversity, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000.

The main task of International Day for Biodiversity is to draw public attention to the problem of the irreversible extinction of many representatives of flora and fauna on Earth.

Biodiversity is the basis of life. Its preservation is necessary for human existence. Unfortunately, the intensity of the use of components of biodiversity leads to the depletion of natural resources: many species and ecosystems are disappearing and endangered, the threat to the genetic fund is constantly growing.

Wildlife conservation is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed globally. Zoos of the world have the opportunity to operate in all areas of conservation: breeding of endangered species, research related to the conservation of rare species, aimed at protecting animals and their habitats and, of course, active environmental education.

Today Mykolaiv Zoo creates all necessary conditions to ensure good living conditions of animals.

One of the main missions of our zoo is to preserve wild animals and create artificial populations in case of extinction of the species in nature. It is extremely important to explain to society the basic methods of preserving both nature as a whole and individual species of animals. Large display stands with scientific information about the fauna and flora, which are located throughout the zoo, arouse people's interest in the problems of protection of certain species of animals.

Only an educated person armed with knowledge will save the world of biodiversity!
